Been reading William Morris’s Useful Work V. Useless toil. All very man vs machine. Hence Carbon copys…. plus my dads a printer. Its part of Penguins Great Ideas series which are really nice little books to collect. Next on my list  Walter Benjamins The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. Keep it industrial.

Next up….. Big paper big copies, getting some pads made up.

Here’s some pics of the final piece I’ve submitted for my degree show. A 14ft tiled square grid that compresses and references the original features of the space. You too can walk this way from Tuesday 30th June-Saturday 4th July at Byam Shaw School of Art, Archway North London. (PV 29th June) more details can be found here. Interestingly my course is at the bottem of the list..

Week Won.

Wednesday

Anna

Here’s some images of the set up for my degree show, day 3. I’m installing a grided floor that when stood on compresses. The room itself isn’t completely square so i am making a’ frame’ for the grid to sit within. The 7×7 grid will be in 49 4 tile sections, painted grey to reference the original flooring. Think site specific, Sol Le Witt and Robert Morris.

Its amazing how out of date these photos from Wednesday are already! The walls up, things are looking cleaner slicker whiter better and I have acquired some excellent jigsaw skills. Bring on next week which will include lots of sanding and finishing. maybe some video clips of the floor being used aswell. The picture above is Anna, my ace first year helper painting the frame.

The start

Its all happening. Moved into my degree show space yesterday. This is a picture of the beggining of the day with some floor panels fully foamed and some not, by the end of the day it was pretty much down. Still lots to do though. Updates will happen all next week…. in the meantime Ill be drawing like a mad woman and trying to sort out some lovely new things for LIK + NEON before my glorious return back to the Devon seaside. YES.

To test is best.

Test Legs

Its anyones guess whats happening to my photo upload/sizing skills at the moment but ah well. Heres a little test piece of my floor that im making for the degree show. It moves. Ever so slowly and ever so simply. No need for compression springs, hinges or other mind blowing defices. The technique? Well thats a secret my friends, like Irn Bru or KFC’s 12 herbs and spices no one will ever really know.

Things to make and do.

Parquet Necklace

Not a hundred percent sure why this image is so small but Ill roll with it. Here we have some work you can wear, there’s only 2 in existence at the moment, both shamelessly being bandyed around the city with smug satisfaction. If you want one drop me a line.

Thank you to Claire for letting me use her chest.

Desperately trying to find a small slice of space on my hard drive I uncovered these gems.

Apologies for the lack in updates, I blame degree shows and east end bus routes taking up all my time. Current favourite things include….

Kuniyoshi exhibit at the Royal Academy (talks on friday are free with a ticket at 7pm- bargain!)

The Long Weekend at the Tate Modern features a recreation of one of my biggest art crushes; bodyspacemotionthings by Robert Morris is a series of huge props/rollers/beams/platforms and pioneered the idea of audience interaction within sculpture and art in general.
